New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says Rutgers University President Robert Barchi's paid advisory positions at two companies that do business with the school is "no surprise."

Christie says Barchi disclosed the posts before being hired and worked out a deal to recuse himself in cases of conflict. Christie says the Rutgers Board of Governors signed off on Barchi knowing about his outside work.

The governor was asked Tuesday if he still supports Barchi after The Record newspaper reported that he is paid $317,000 in fees and stocks by VWR International and Covance Inc.

Barchi's Rutgers salary can reach $747,000 if he receives bonuses.

Christie says it's not his job to micromanage the school. But he says one of Rutgers' two governing boards should be dissolved.
