Christie Ready to Accept Tuition Compromise – Report

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is prepared to sign legislation easing college tuition costs for thousands of students in the U.S. illegally if the Legislature agrees that these students cannot qualify for state financial aid.

Two administration officials who asked not to be identified say Christie will sign the bill as early as Thursday if the Legislature agrees. The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the legislation publicly before the governor takes action.

The measure extends eligibility for in-state tuition rates to state residents brought to this country illegally as children.

The Assembly is expected to pass it Thursday. The officials say the governor plans to conditionally veto the measure immediately, sending it back to the Legislature.

With both houses in session, Christie's changes could be considered Thursday.
