Christie held a town hall meeting Wednesday in a packed union hall in Perth Amboy, shoring up the support of private sector unions. He drew a distinction between them and public sector unions, whose pensions and benefits he has fought to overhaul.

Christie said he wants the American Dream project at the Meadowlands completed, saying it will create jobs and revenue.

The proposed complex would include entertainment, restaurants, and an indoor water park.

But the project has stalled. Owners of the two teams sued the developer, saying it breached a contract and did not show them plans for proposed expansion.

In August, a judge threw out part of the lawsuit but said the teams can refile in the future.
