The two officers who fatally shot a man in Brick Township Sunday are good cops with no history of disciplinary problems, Chief Nils R. Bergquist told New Jersey 101.5 Tuesday.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office released the names of the two patrol officers — Jason Nye and Ryan Osborn — Tuesday morning. It also confirmed the man killed was 21-year-old Julian Hoffman of Brick Township.

Nye, 31 was hired in 2011. Osborn, 25, was hired in 2013.

Bergquist said he didn't have either officer's personnel file handy, but "these are very good officers." Neither has had a role in an officer-involved shooting before.

Both are on paid administrative leave while investigations by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the state Attorney General's Office continue. The AG's office reviews all uses of deadly force by police.

What exactly happened Sunday still remains unclear.

The prosecutor's office has said the officers responded to a home on Cherrywood Circle after receiving a call from a man threatening to "create a disturbance." It said a man approached the officers with "what appeared to be a black semi-automatic hand gun" that officers ordered him to drop. When he failed to comply, the officers fired at the man several times, killing him, the prosecutor's office said.

But the prosecutor's office hasn't clarified whether the item did indeed turn out to be a gun. The Asbury Park Press quotes Julian Hoffman's father Derek Hoffman, saying the item was an air rifle and that his son did indeed put it down.

But the report also says Derek Hoffman didn't see the incident himself, and was relying on accounts from other witnesses. Hoffman told NJ.com that he has video from a surveillance camera on his home that shows Julian's arms as being up.The prosecutor's office reportedly said none of the neighbors it spoke to acknowledged witnessing the incident.

Derek Hoffman was reached briefly by New Jersey 101.5 Tuesday but not immediately available to speak.

In a statement released Tuesday, the prosecutor's office said the investigation continues "and all efforts will be made to expedite its' completion." But the prosecutor's office didn't anticipate releasing more information that day.

"We ask the media and public to refrain from speculating on the facts surrounding the shooting," it said. "A full account of the evidence and circumstances surrounding the shooting will be released at the conclusion of the investigation."
