It seems everything in New Jersey must be "law," and some politicians are proving cheerleading is no exception with a bill that would make the activity an "official sport" if passed.

The bill requires cheerleading coaches to undergo training "specific to the sport of cheerleading and the safety of cheerleaders." Gyms and fitness centers where cheerleaders train would also have to provide safety harnesses under the legislation.

Yet the New Jersey Scholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) is resisting being "forced" to accept cheering as a sport because it says the law would "change the nature" of the activity.

People have long debated whether cheerleading is a real sport, but the existence of this bill is a sign politics may be too intertwined with our lives.
