NEWARK — A man remains in custody after allegedly punching an auxiliary bishop in Newark on Saturday.

A video obtained by TAPintoNewark shows a man, identified by NJ.com as Charles E. Miller approaching the Rev. Manuel Cruz during a Mass in honor of baseball legend Roberto Clemente and knocking him to the ground with a single punch.

According to NJ.com, Miller was charged with aggravated assault in the incident and was being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility.

Archdiocese of Newark spokesman Jim Goodness said after the incident that the bishop was treated at a local hospital but was able to return home Saturday night. He was also in church on Sunday to address members of the congregation.

“He hopes people will understand this was an isolated incident," Goodness said at the time of the Bishop's message.
