The Star-Ledger reports residents rushed the stage Tuesday after Mayor Cory Booker made an unprecedented appearance and cast the deciding vote to fill the vacancy left by Donald Payne.

Booker backed Shanique Davis Speight over the son of former mayor Sharpe James.

Tensions rose as police escorted Speight to take the oath of office. She was ushered out and sworn in by the city clerk.

Some residents chanted "Cory's gotta go!"
