Cardinal Egan, former NY archbishop, dead at 82
Cardinal Edward Egan, who previously served as head of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, died Thursday at NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan at the age of 82.
Egan died at 2:20 p.m. after going into cardiac arrest, according to a press release by the Archdiocese of New York.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois on April 2, 1932, Cardinal Egan was ordained as a priest on Dec. 15, 1957. He was then consecrated a bishop in 1985, according to the Archdiocese of New York's website.
Cardinal Egan served as the Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar for Education of the Archdiocese from 1985-88. In 1988, Pope John Paul II appointed him to serve as the bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport. He served in that position until 2000, when he was appointed archbishop of New York, and then made a cardinal in 2001.
