BROOKLYN — The  driver of an SUV stolen in New Jersey caused a crash on the Belt Parkway that sent 8 people to the hospital and then ran off, according to police.

The NYPD told the New York Daily News that the car rear ended a sedan with three young children age 8, 7 and 4 inside. The 59-year-old woman driving the car was hospitalized, and listed in critical condition, according to the report.  The children were not injured.

The SUV was driven into a concrete barrier along the right side of the highway, and the driver left the scene. It was reported stolen in New Jersey by a person described as a white or Hispanic male wearing a white T-shirt, police told ABC 7 Eyewitness News.

Two men and two women inside a sedan hit by the SUV were also hospitalized

Blue napkins with "Happy Birthday" printed on them were scattered all over the highway, according to the report.
