WATCHUNG — A car that went off the highway closed both sides of Route 78 in Central Jersey.

An Accura TL sedan went off the road and into the trees of the center median near Exit 41 for Deepdale Road just after noon, according to State Police Trooper Laurence Peele.

The driver of the car was the only occupant, according to Peele, who was taken via medical helicopter to Morristown Medical Center.

The accident temporarily closed the eastbound lanes.

Peele said the sedan was the only car involved in the crash. The identity of the driver was not disclosed.

The westbound left lane remained closed for an investigation, creating a multi-mile delay that will likely impact the afternoon commute.
