PATERSON — A car fire set off a fire in two homes it was parked between on Friday.

ABC 7 reported a man drove his car, which was on fire, between two houses on 4th Street on Friday afternoon. The fire spread to the two homes, displacing 26 people age 2 to 71.

"Two doors blew like it was an explosion and the flames shot to my house and the house next door," displaced resident Carlos Torres told the television station.

Deputy Fire Chief Frank Calamita told the Bergen Record the driver of the car was escorted from the area and has not yet been charged with anything. He said conditions in fighting the fire were hard because of the 90-degree, temperatures according to the Record's report.

The New Jersey chapter of the Red Cross is assisting the displaced families with temporary housing.
