Man Drives Car Into Raritan River In Bridgewater

An elderly Somerville man was seriously injured when he accidentally drove his car into the Raritan River.   

Authorities say 80-year-old Dominic Ciurelo of Somerville was attempting a U-turn on a narrow road along the waterway when his car went in the water and landed upside down around 10:40 a.m. Monday.

A passer-by saw the vehicle go over the riverbank and notifiedpolice.   Divers from the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office respondedand pulled Ciurelo from the vehicle, which was submerged in about 5to 6 feet of water.

He was taken to Somerset Medical Center, wherehe was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.

The accident remains under investigation.
