You know free speech is under attack when "Captain Underpants" is the most banned booked in America. The comic book style children's series outranked the racy "Fifty Shades of Grey" among books banned in America in 2013, after years of complaints filed to the Office for Intellectual Freedom.

The book was cited for "offensive language" unsuited to the series' target age group of elementary-school kids, as well as violence, according to the American Library Association.

Other complaints against the book include insensitivity and "encouraging children to disobey authority."

The book's author, Dav Pilkey doesn't see the book's theme of challenging authority as a bad thing though. He said that growing up he and his fellow students didn't think to question those in power, even when they were "villains," because of their accepted societal positions.

Another positive, according to some parents and teachers, is that the series spurs boys to read.
