A southern New Jersey man who killed his longtime girlfriend in her home last summer has been sentenced to 19 years in prison.

William White of Camden must serve nearly 18 years of the sentence imposed Wednesday before becoming eligible for parole.

The 60-year-old White pleaded guilty in March to aggravated manslaughter in the June 2012 death of 49-year-old Alma Brito-Reyes, The couple had been in a relationship for 15 years, but she was breaking up with him and her relatives claimed White had threatened to kill her if she left him.

White admitted hitting Brito-Reyes with a handgun and choking her. He then used her bank card to withdraw $500 before fleeing the state.

White was arrested a few weeks later at a homeless assistance center in Homestead, Fla.
