Sen. Barbara Buono, the Democrat running for governor against Gov. Chris Christie, has received her second endorsement from a statewide environmental group.

New Jersey's Sierra Club announced its backing Wednesday, citing Buono's opposition to hydraulic fracking and support for a multistate pact to reduce global warming.

The endorsement comes a month after the state Environmental Federation announced its intention to back the upstart Democrat over the Republican governor it endorsed in 2009.

Richard Isaac, the Sierra Club's political chair, says it's rare to get the opportunity to endorse a public official who is a true friend of the environment.

The Sierra Club backed the independent candidate in 2009 over both Christie and incumbent Jon Corzine.

Christie has received endorsements from at least four Democratic mayors and some trade unions.
