Brush Fire Danger Remains High in New Jersey
A day after several brush fires broke out around New Jersey, the Forest Fire Service is warning of an extreme fire danger for Monday with more fire developing.
Winds continue to gust out of the south-southwest with a continued low relative humidity which makes for idea conditions for a fire to spread quickly according to the FFS website.
Crews in Little Silver were fighting a brush fire on Prospect Avenue on Monday afternoon reports the Monmouth Police, Fire and EMS Facebook page. Another fire was reported in Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold by Jersey Shore Hurricane News.
On Sunday a large brush fire that burned 20 acres in Brick broke out on Sunday afternoon on Jordan Road and Waters Edge Court on the edge of a residential according to Brick Police causing some homes to be evacuated. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service used helicopters to drop water on the area.
Another fire broke out in Manchester in a wooded area behind the Hook and Hoof Gun Club on Route 539 creating heavy black smoke from a half-acre wooded area. New Jersey Forest Fire Service also provided air assistance to douse the flames.
Two fire vehicles were destroyed in a fire along Grieves Parkway in Salem City when the wind suddenly changed direction according to the South Jersey Times, burning the trucks from Pennsville and Elinsboro fire companies. Salem’s Washington Fire Co. Battalion Chief John A. Pelura III told the newspaper about 100 acres were burned.
A South Brunswick firefighter broke an ankle battling a fire off Route 1 in Kendall Park being called "suspicious" that charred an acre of woods and accordng to NJ.com. Several homes were evacuated as a precaution as flames came within 100 feed of a shed in the backyard of a home on Sand Hill Road. Police are talking to a "person of interest" connected to the fire.
10-15 acres were burned in the Lower Bank of the Pine Barrens of Burlington County according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service that required several air tankers to be brought in.
