Both men were taken by boat to the Pier One’s marina and taken to Community Medical Center.  Matthew was pronounced dead at the hospital while Patrick was treated for minor injuries.

A cause of death for Matthew Barther has not been determined.

One of the jet skis drifted several miles to the north and was spotted in the water near Rochester Drive in Brick prompting police to begin a search for the rider. After an hour long search with a helicopter police were able to connect the jet ski to the earlier Toms River incident.
