Two men with butcher knives hacked another man to death Wednesday afternoon in the southeast London neighborhood of Woolwich, just a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks.

Police wounded the two suspects in a shootout. The men remain hospitalized. Their identities and that of their victim are not known. One of the alleged attackers is reported to be in serious condition.

Two U.K. government officials who had been briefed say the attack seemed to have been ideologically motivated by radical Islam. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak about the ongoing investigation.

They say their categorization is not based solely on video footage of what appeared to be one attacker criticizing the British government.

British Prime Minister David Cameron says there are "strong indications" the attack is related to terror.
