Without an inkling that she was about to re-enter pop culture consciousness due to her daughter’s appearance on “American Idol”, I requested Brenda K. Starr’s biggest hit, “I Still Believe”.

It reached #13 in 1988; her only big hit was the follow up, “What You See Is What You Get”.  It’s appropriate that her daughter is following in the family business, as Brenda is the daughter of a musician/singer, Harvey Kaplan of Spiral Starecase.  At one point in her career, Mariah Carey sang backup vocals for Starr, and the story goes that it was Brenda who passed Carey’s demo tape to Tommy Mottola at Columbia Records; Mottola and Carey eventually wed.  Now Brenda is cheering on her daughter, Gianna Isabella, as she competes on AI.

No, Big Joe still didn’t play my request.
