Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, according to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

It is important for both men and women to take the necessary steps to reduce their risk for developing breast cancer. Knowing what factors can increase your risk can help you develop a breast health plan that is right for you.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure recommends several prevention steps:

  1. Know your risk - Learn about your family health history and your own personal risk.
  2. Get screened - Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40.
  3. Know what is normal for you and see your health care provider if you notice any breast changes, such as lumps, swelling or changes in size.
  4. Make healthy lifestyle choices - Exercise and maintain a healthy weight. Limit alcohol intake.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) provides an interactive tool to estimate a woman's risk for developing breast cancer. Women are encouraged to discuss their results with their doctor.
