Eagles Fire Juan Castillo, Promote Bowles [VIDEO]
- The Philadelphia Eagles fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and promoted secondary coach Todd Bowles to replace him just over 40 hours after blowing a 10-point lead over the Lions in under five minutes to drop to 3-3 on the year. The Eagles lost 26-23 in overtime.
“I want to make it clear that I have nothing but the ultimate respect for Juan Castillo as a coach and as a person," head coach Andy Reid said in a statement. "He’s one of the finest football coaches that I have ever worked with. He has served this organization extremely well for 18 years and letting him go was a difficult decision. I know he will continue to be a successful coach in this league and wish he and his family nothing but the best.
“We’re six games into the season and average isn’t good enough. I know the potential of our team and insist on maximizing it.”
The Eagles are ranked 12th in total defense and 13th in scoring defense, but Sunday held the Lions to six points and 163 yards through three quarters before allowing 20 points and 286 yards in the final quarter and overtime. Veteran cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was critical of Castillo in an exchange when I asked him about the change in strategies from the first three quarters to the last.
