HAMILTON (Mercer) — The boyfriend of a woman found fatally shot inside her home Sunday morning has been arrested and charged in her death.

Daniel Torres Jr., 38, was charged late Sunday in connection with the death of Jennifer Beers, 31, in the apartment they shared on South Olden Avenue, according to Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri.

Police were called to the second-floor apartment not far from the Trenton border around 6 a.m. and heard gunshots as they arrived, the prosecutor's office said. Torres was still in the apartment when Beer's body was found on a bedroom floor with multiple gunshots. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A dog was also found dead close to Beer's body.

It wasn't clear from the prosecutor's statement why police were initially called to the home.

Onofri said Torres was charged Sunday night with murder, possession of firearms for an unlawful purpose and cruelty to an animal. A motion to detain Torres was filed on Monday.
