TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Cory Booker's campaign says he has agreed to just one debate in his re-election race against Republican Jeff Bell.

The move has set off a debate about debates, with Bell saying the New Jersey Democrat dropped out of two events.

Booker campaign spokeswoman Silvia Alvarez says Booker never agreed to the debates, but he didn't back out of them. She says one debate sponsored by the New Jersey League of Women Voters and scheduled to air statewide next month will be enough to help voters decide.

Bell spokesman Rich Danker says Booker's campaign was working with organizers before saying he would not do them.

The Bell campaign says it expects Booker will back out of the remaining debate and is challenging campaign manager Brendan Gill to debate instead.
