Prosecutors say the death of person whose body was found inside a burning car in Trenton this weekend will initially be investigated as a homicide.

City firefighters found the badly burned body shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, when they responded to the blaze on Hart Avenue.

Mercer County prosecutors say the victim is believed to be a man, but a cause and manner of death have not been determined. It's also not clear if the victim died before the fire started or whether the vehicle belonged to that person.

Authorities say there also were reports of shots fired around the time the fire was reported, but it appears that those reports were unfounded.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed sometime this week.
