PBS journalist Bill Moyers is turning down a $35,000 fee that Rutgers University offered for speaking at part of its graduation ceremony.

Officials at the university in New Jersey said they sent Moyers a form to process the check for his address at the May 15 ceremony, but they were told on Tuesday that he would not accept the honorarium.

A representative for Moyers said Wednesday that he had turned down the fee. Moyers did not immediately comment.

The Associated Press reported last week that Moyers was among several speakers who received more than $30,000 for speeches at graduation ceremonies this year.

Moyers spoke at a convocation ceremony for one of the university's divisions and Rutgers said it always intended to pay the fee.
