Vice President Joe Biden says the middle class has been "buried" during the past four years, and Republicans immediately seized on the comment as an unwitting indictment of the Obama administration.

At a campaign appearance in Charlotte, N.C., Biden criticized Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for proposing policies that Biden said would cut taxes for millionaires and raise them for middle-class families.

Calling his objection "deadly earnest," Biden asked how Republicans "can justify raising taxes on a middle class that has been buried the last four years?

A Romney spokeswoman said she "couldn't agree more." She added that the middle class has been "buried" under President Barack Obama's policies.
