A black bear sighted in a tree on campus at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) was  removed by fire and police Thursday afternoon around 3:30 p.m.

Officials used tranquilizers and a net to remove the bear from the tree as a TV news helicopter circled the area. The bear will be relocated to a less populous area, officials say but they didn't specify where.

The black bear was sighted in a tree on the Ewing campus of The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) today just before 2 p.m.

Around 1 p.m. a township-wide alert was issued to residents of the township via telephone warning of a wandering bear and urging residents to call the police if they encounter the bruin.

TCNJ students received an alert from the college indicating that a bear was sighted at the Green Lane playing field and was located in a tree outside Townshouses East.

The alert said, "Police are on the scene and Animal Control has been called so the bear can be safely removed."
