CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) -- The Battleship New Jersey is in line for some upgrades aimed at keeping it afloat financially as a museum.

The group that runs the ship on the Camden waterfront is planning $1.6 million in work and hopes to get a bond guarantee from the Camden County government to ease the financing.

Executive Director Philip Rowan tells the Courier-Post a key improvement would be replacing the electric heating system with natural gas. That's expected to save the operation nearly $500,000 per year, providing cash to help it pay off the $1 million in debt it has.

Other changes include replacing mooring lines, repairing gangways and upgrading elevators.
