Atlantic County Gun Buyback Yields Over 2,000 Weapons

Officials in New Jersey have netted another 2,000 weapons during the state's fifth gun buyback program.

That brings the total number of guns collected through the programs to 9,000 since December.

Atlantic County authorities say 2,061 guns were collected overall during the two-day event staged at churches in Atlantic City and Pleasantville. The weapons turned in ranged from BB guns to assault rifles and also included some illegal weapons.

Acting County Prosecutor Jim McClain says officials spent about $280,860 of the $300,000 earmarked for the buyback program. Weapons were exchanged for up to $250 under the no-questions-asked program.

An overall breakdown of the weapons collected will be released Monday by the state Attorney General's office.
