EGG HARBOR — State police say one person is dead and four others were injured in two separate shootings in the Egg Harbor Township area Monday.

New Jersey State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez told NJ 101.5 that police began receiving multiple calls regarding the incident just after 3 p.m.

According to NJ State Police Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Williams, all five of those hurt or killed suffered gunshot wounds.

“Right now we have confirmed a total of five victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was located on the Garden State Parkway, at mile-marker 37.9 northbound,” Williams told NJ 101.5 Monday afternoon. “The gentleman suffered from a fatal gunshot wound to the head."

In a statement Monday night, police said that a short time after the shooting, a white Ford Expedition pulled into the parking lot of the Wawa near the airport entrance.

"Four men were taken from that vehicle to the hospital with gunshot wounds. All are being treated for various injuries," police said, adding that all of the people who were shot in the incident were males under the age of 40.

In a statement on Facebook, police said around the same time, a silver Nissan was located by troopers on the northbound side of the Garden State Parkway near the  the AC Expressway.

"The driver of that car was uninjured, but the passenger had sustained a fatal gunshot wound," police said, adding that weapons were also recovered near one of the scenes that investigators believe "are connected with the crime."

Detectives are trying to determine whether there were other people or vehicles involved in the incident, and police say the investigation was expected to continue throughout the night.

"At this point it seems evident that the people involved in this shooting had some connection with each other and that the crime was not random," police said.

Earlier Monday, Williams said there were a total of three vehicles involved in the incidents. One of the vehicles, a black Dodge Ram with a temporary Pennsylvania registration, remains at large.

"Preliminary indicates several individuals were firing at each other from three different vehicles," Williams said.

Police have not provided any information on the severity of the four others shot. The names of those involved have not yet been released. The identity of the man who was fatally shot has not been released, as authorities have not yet notified the next of kin.
