TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The Assembly has passed a package of bills requiring companies that have contracts with state entities to use products made in the United States.

The five-bill package passed Thursday despite an effort to defeat the legislation by Assembly Republicans. Republican Leader Jon Bramnick denounced them, saying they would drive business from the state.

The bills call for companies with contracts with public colleges and universities, as well as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Delaware River Port Authority, Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, and the Delaware River and Bay Authority to use products made in the United States when fulfilling their contracts.

Supporters say they represent an investment in the future.

Four will go to the governor. One returns to the Senate for consideration.
