Assembly Approves Measure to Change Election Day

The New Jersey Assembly has approved a bill to move this fall’s general election from November to October.

The move would put the election on the same day as a special U.S. Senate election to complete the term of the late Frank Lautenberg.

Gov. Chris Christie has promised to veto the bill if it reaches his desk. The state Senate is expected to vote on the measure Thursday.

Many Democrats are upset that Christie scheduled the special election for Oct. 16 — 20 days before the Nov. 5 election that features Christie’s re-election bid against Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono.

Officials say each election costs the state about $12 million to run.
