Are People Following the Saggy Pants Ban? [AUDIO]

The ban on saggy pants has been in effect on Wildwood’s boardwalk since July 9, and so far, everyone is behaving.

No tickets have been issued yet, according to Mayor Ernie Troiano.

Under the ban, pants are not allowed to settle below the waist. Violators are subject to a $25 fine, and the penalties increase for repeat offenders. The move also requires shirts and footwear on the boardwalk past 8 p.m.

“It’s been really a non-event at this particular point,” Troiano said. “Everybody seems to be walking around with their pants up, shoes on, shirts on.”

Since the ban went into effect, he said, one shirtless male was reminded of the ordinance by a cop. The male apologized and put his shirt back on.

“We’re not out looking for it,” Troiano added. “If it presents itself, we’ll handle it.”

The ban is reportedly in response to complaints from visitors who were offended by “obnoxious attire” and refused to return to the resort town. Troiano said the ordinance is not meant to keep people off the boardwalk, but to keep the visitors coming and perpetuate Wildwood’s reputation as a family-friendly location.

The law has received attention nationally and internationally. According to Troiano, feedback has been almost completely positive.

“I figured this would be a 50-50 thing, and it’s not even close,” he said.

One man from Colorado said he was revising his trip to Washington D.C. to include Wildwood. Another man from Texas decided to add a Wildwood weekend to his Pennsylvania trip, as a way to support the city’s stance on the issue.
