APK Towing Suing Seaside Heights Over Sandy Work

A dispute between a New Jersey shore town and a towing company is escalating. The Asbury Park Press reports APK Towing has sued the borough of Seaside Heights for $2.6 million in damages stemming from work it did after Superstorm Sandy.

APK has a contract with the town to tow vehicles. After Sandy, Seaside Heights residents were outraged when they discovered bills of $800 to $2,500 for towing and storage fees.

Borough officials say local ordinances set maximum basic towing rates at $105 and storage fees at $25 per day.

Seaside Heights temporarily suspended APK's contract last month, and the state Division of Consumer Affairs investigated but cleared the company of wrongdoing.

An attorney for APK says the company's owners were "thrown under the bus" by the borough.
