Another Unlikely Christie Admirer

Acclaimed director/producer Steven Spielberg and Democrat contributor tells the Hollywood Reporter that Christie is a “new hero” of his because of his handling of superstorm Sandy.

“He was able to put party politics aside for the greater good. And the fact that he would, right at the end of the election cycle, tell the truth about his gratitude — he was my hero,” said Spielberg, who lived in Haddon for part of his childhood.

Prior to Sandy, Christie was an active supporter of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, campaigning around the country bashing President Obama’s ability to lead. As Sandy approached, however, Christie took himself off the campaign trail to concentrate on the storm’s aftermath and found himself having to work with the White House to get relief dollars for New Jersey.

Christie’s warm embrace of Obama when he came to tour the damage was criticized by many Republicans who felt he went too far in his appreciation for Obama’s help. However, it also gained him a fast reputation as someone who is willing to compromise and work with the opposing party. It also gained him a hug from his “new friend” Bruce Springsteen and an on stage shout out at the 12-12-12 Sandy relief concert from Jon Bon Jovi, both Democrat supporters.

Spielberg donated over $87,000 to the Democratic Party in 2008. While initially supporting Hilary Clinton for President in 2008, Spielberg Spielberg directed an Obama video shown at the Democrat National Convention in August 2008 and attended Obama’s inauguration.
