A 3-year-old boy is dead following a police chase in Newark on Friday morning.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office in a statement that Newark Police were chasing 22-year-old Troy Ruff, who was wanted on aggravated assault and weapons charges from an incident in May.

Ruff failed to pull over when ordered to by police, and drove his 2002 Hyundai Sonata into another car on 15th Street, the prosecutor's office said. His car then moved onto a curb and hit a 3-year-old boy.who was standing next to his mother, the office said.

The boy, Rahmere Tullis, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"My son was the sweetest child in this world," Rahmere's father, Cordell Tullis, told ABC 7"They should've never been chasing him like that. (It) would have never happened and my son would still be here."

Ruff was arrested by Newark police and charged with aggravated manslaughter,vehicular homicide and eluding the police. He is being held on $500,000 bail,
