Amtrak says the first northbound departure from New York Penn Station was Train 194 at 5:00pm.  The first southbound departure from Boston South Station was Train 2259 at 4:10pm.

Travelers should expect delays to continue on Monday as work will still be going on to fully clean up the area of the derailment. Amtrdak expects to run a full schedule of service on Monday.

Service has been suspended since 1:30 a..m. when a Providence +Worcester freight line derailed around  just east of the New Haven station blocking tracks in both directions according to Amtrak's website. Media spokesman Craig Schulz says the derailment involving 3 empty cars happened in a "bad spot" near an interlocking switch.

A special train that took travelers through Springfield, Massachusetts was run with little warning on Sunday morning, one train in each direction. No other trains left from Boston or New York.

The cars on the train involved in the derailment were empty so there is no spillage to clean up.

Amtrak service between New York and Washington is unaffected.

Passengers who have paid but choose not to travel due to this service disruption can receive a refund or a voucher for future travel. Some tickets booked online that have not yet been printed can be modified or canceled on Amtrak.com or by using the free Amtrak mobile app.
