Amazon promises "more deals than Black Friday" for today's Prime Day to celebrate the company's 20th anniversary and started rolling out deals at 3 a.m. for those who are members of Amazon's Prime service. which offers a free 30-day trial membership that can be created and used today. New offers will become available every 10 minutes according to a press release promoting the day.

Walmart's CEO attacks the concept of paying for a premium service in offering their own deals called "atomic deals," which lowers prices on over 2,000 items.  "We’re standing up for our customers and everyone else who sees no rhyme or reason for paying a premium to save," writes Fernando Madeira on the company's website. The company is also lowering the minimum order amount to get free shipping from $50 to $35. However, Walmart has started its own premium service called Shipping Pass which offers unlimited 3-day shipping for $50 per year.

Amazon responded by accusing "some retailers" of charging more in their brick-and-mortar stores than online.

Target is getting in on the Prime Day action as well with its annual Black Friday in July sale with free shipping on orders of at least $25 and an extra 10% off by using a special promo code.

While Amazon has been hyping the day hard, experts believe Black Friday will remain the special sales day to beat. "Consumers are most motivated to spend their money when it’s associated with an event, and most holiday sales are centered around a sentimental or emotional gift giving component,” Shopatron CEO told Forbes, calling Prime Day an "unsentimental, ordinary sales gimmick."
