CLIFTON — A police chase in northern New Jersey ended in a crash that left an officer hospitalized and a motorcyclist facing charges.

Authorities say the chase started Sunday night in Clifton, when the officer tried to stop 27-year-old city resident Christopher Cena because he allegedly was driving recklessly.

The chase eventually went into nearby Paterson, where the police cruiser and motorcycle collided. The officer suffered a head injury and remained hospitalized Monday in stable condition, while Cena was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

Cena was charged with eluding and aggravated assault on a police officer. His bail was set at $100,000 and it wasn't known Monday if he has retained an attorney.

The Clifton officer's name was not released.

Authorities say the collision remains under investigation.
