HIGHLAND PARK — The man arrested for beating forcing a woman into the basement of a building at gun point was charged with the kidnapping and attempted murder of a teen in 2014.

NJ.com reported that court records show Brandon Cox of Franklin Township served more a year in prison for the incident as part of a plea deal. In that case, he was accused of forcing a 14-year-old to have sex with him four times between March 2013 and April 2014.

He pleaded guilty in May to charges of child abuse and neglect under the plea deal. He was sentenced to 18 months but had severed most of that time while awaiting trial, and was released a few days after sentencing, the report said.

Cox is not listed on the state's online Megan's Law sex offender registry.

In the more recent incident, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey has said, Cox approached a woman 36-year-old with a gun and forced her into the basement of a nearby apartment building. A child was with her at the time, Carey said.

Carey said Cox then proceeded to sexually assault the woman and punched her before fleeing the scene.

Cox is scheduled for a court hearing on Friday morning.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the case to call Detective Sean McGraw of the Highland Park Police Department at 732-572-3800, or Detective Allie Bitterman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at 732-745-4401.
