Accused killer teen who escaped detention center is caught in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY — The fourth fugitive from a youth detention center was captured on Thursday in an apartment.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner said accused killer Michael Huggins was found at the Carolina Village Apartments in the 100 block of South Carolina Avenue around 10:30 a.m. He surrendered without incident, according to Tyner.

Huggins was found with a handgun during his arrest, according to Huggins, who said the weapon did not belong to a member of law enforcement. Tyner would not elaborate on why the 18-year-old was at the apartment. He said the apartment's residents had been cooperative with police.

"Huggins is currently charged with escape, robbery, assault on a law enforcement officer and conspiracy. He will also be charged with unlawful possession of a handgun and some additional charges in the very near future pending further investigation," Tyner said during a press conference in Atlantic City following Huggins arrest.

Huggins, 18, and three other juveniles escaped from the Harborfields Youth Detention Facility in Egg Harbor City early Wednesday morning after overpowering a guard, taking his keys and stealing his car.

Juveniles identified as Raymir Lampkin, Stephine Woodley and Donovan Nickerson were found several hours later about 35 miles away in Bridgeton.

Tyner did not offer say how the three traveled to Bridgeton or Huggins got back to Atlantic City. He also would not disclose details of their escape.

"We're investigating all leads that may suggest that there are accomplices involved so that is an ongoing investigation," Tyner said.

Tyner said the three teens, all age 16 and 17, were in custody but would not offer additional details citing their age.

Huggins was charged with the October 2016 fatal shooting of Davonte Lee in Bridgeton. He was being held at the juvenile facility because he was 17 years old at the time of the shooting.

Harborfields houses males and females who have been deemed unsuitable for release pending court appearances. It is managed by the state Department of Law and Public Safety.
