The Toms River chapter of the US Youth Soccer's TOPSoccer was started in 2001. It is run through the Toms River Futbol Club.

Coordinator Vincent Guardino said that TOPSoccer is open to all children between the ages of 4-17.

"It was put out there so children, who are autistic and physically challenged, could play soccer and do things," Guardino said.

The program takes place twice a year during the spring and fall, with the group meeting on Saturdays for roughly 10 weeks.

Volunteers help develop the athletes' physical fitness, technical skills and self-esteem. The Saturday sessions focus on individual development and team play, or simply just allowing the chance for the kids to run around and have some fun.

"No child has to play soccer," he said. "We want them to enjoy themselves."
