WASHINGTON (AP) -- T-Mobile USA knowingly made hundreds of millions of dollars off its customers in potentially bogus charges, a federal regulator alleged Tuesday in a complaint likely to mar the reputation of a household name in wireless communications.

Joe Melomo says the phone call promising a "safe" investment in gold and silver offered him hope, a way to help cover the enormous bills from his restaurant. But Melomo says those pledges of huge profits with little risk never once mentioned whopping, hidden fees that ended up wiping out most of his retirement savings.
