TRENTON — Two more more cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have postponed football games in New Jersey — in the latest cases, homecoming games.

An outbreak of the viral illness at Mendham High School led to its game at Roxbury High School being postponed.

"This is never an easy decision but the administration feels it is the right one. The health and safety of our student athletes continues to be the highest priority. Thank you for your understanding," a message on the Roxbury High School website.

The decision means the Gaels homecoming game is also postponed.

Warren County's first diagnosed case at North Warren High School has postponed the Patriots game in Boonton, according to the Daily Record. The game, the second for the school to be postponed because an opponent was affected by HFM, was also the Bombers' homecoming game October. Homecoming is now scheduled for October 14.

North Warren athletic director John Simonetti told the newspaper the decision to postpone was made on Wednesday.

Holmdel also postponed its Friday night game in Red Bank because of an outbreak among several students and has taken steps to prevent additional cases.

“As our maintenance staff has done all week, all locker rooms, trainers rooms, weight room and equipment will continue to be disinfected and cleaned on a daily basis until we can confirm that the treat of additional cases has passed,” Holmdel superintendent Dr. Robert McGarry wrote in a statement to Holmdel’s parents, according to the Shore Sports Network.

HFMD, which is most common in infants and young children but can occur in teens and adults, usually develops in three to five days, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Symptoms include a fever, reduced appetite, sore throat and malaise. Adults, however, may not show any symptoms according to the CDC.

The CDC said it can be spread by close personal contact and through coughing or sneezing.

Games involving Hunterdon Central Regional High School, Pequannock High School, Kinnelon and Whippany have also been postponed following outbreaks.

New Jersey 101.5's own meteorologist Dan Zarrow had a painful case of it earlier this summer.
