These ‘Walking Dead’ photos of children got a NJ mom in trouble with Facebook

PISCATAWAY — A Middlesex County mom was kicked off Facebook for a few days because of her photographic recreations of scenes from the zombie TV show "The Walking Dead."

Alana Hubbard, a professional photographer, took pictures using 24 children of friends of hers who are all fans of the AMC show. The shoot used fake guns, crossbows and other props. The show's official website even posted some of the pictures, according to Hubbard.

The photos went viral but some people on the internet were offended at the sight of children using weapons, and reported them to Facebook.

The social media site took down her Facebook page for several days. It's has since been restored.

"There are some people who don't like it, of course, but I am choosing to focus on the positive and the people who do like it and the fans of the show," Hubbard said Wednesday. "But more importantly, it's for myself and for the parents and we all are proud of it and that's all that matters. I don't care what anyone else thinks or what anyone else has to say about it. No one's going to change my mind or convince me to delete them no matter how many people send me hate messages."

Hubbard said that art is subjective and art creates an emotion.

"Not all photos of kids have to be lollilpops and gumdrops. How many pictures do I have of my kids smiling in a park? I wanted to do something different and creative," she said. "I don't understand why this little photographer from Central Jersey is causing such a media storm."

All the parents are fans of the show and supportive of the photo shoot, according to Hubbard.

"They're proud to see their kids on 'The Walking Dead' website, TMZ and the news. It's really exciting for everyone in the community. People are posting 'my neighbor's son's friend is in it' and excited to see all the kids."

The most common complaints she has read and heard are about the kids dressed as zombies and using weapons.

Hubbard sarcastically "thanked" those who reported the photos to Facebook on her professional page.

Hubbard wrote that the pictures were taken on inactive train tracks.

"I would NEVER shoot on live tracks. These are MY KIDS and their friends I would never put them in danger," she wrote.

She also posted a video of the shoot showing the kids involved in the shoot running around.

"I assure you no one was hurt or unhappy in real life during our Walking Dead Cosplay photoshoot," Hubbard wrote.

Hubbard said more photos are on the way as she promised the parents that their kids would be featured in at least one photo.

Hubbard said she is "not all blood, guts and gore."

"I also love my princesses and since 2015 started my own nonprofit organization doing free character photo sessions for pediatric oncology patients called Maria Christina's Little Miracles."
