The outage impacted cellular and 911 service for many Verizon Wireless customers. The cellular company's "down detector" website showed a large area of New Jersey without service, or with weak service as of about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Customers posting to a message board on the site complained of a lack of cell service in South Brunswick, Somerset, Franklin Park, Hillsborough, Glen Gardner and a number of other towns in the Garden State.

South Brunswick Police issued a Nixle alert but later canceled it after being notified by Verizon that it had been able to restore service to the Middlesex County area.  The Verizon outage lasted for approximately 90 minutes.

Verizon had not indicated at that time how long it would take to fully restore cell service to the other customers in the outage area.
