Ex-cop accused of killing ex-girlfriend loses legs after jumping in front of subway

The former New York City police officer accused of using a machete to murder his ex-girlfriend in Bergen County has lost both of his legs after jumping in front of a subway car in New York, Eyewitness News reports.

Arthur Lomando's legs were both amputated above the knee, the report said. He is expected to survive.

Lomando, wanted for the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend in the driveway of her Midland Park home, threw himself in front of a subway train in Manhattan just hours after the killing on Thursday, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office has said.

NJ.com reports Arthur Lomando is accused of attacking Suzanne Bardzell, 48, around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said at a press conference that Lomando smashed the window of Bardzell's vehicle and stabbed her with a "machete-like" knife. That knife was left at the scene, according to NorthJersey.com.

Lomando then jumped in front of a train at the 163rd Street-Amsterdam Avenue station, suffering severe head and leg injuries, the prosecutor said in a series of Tweets Thursday night.

There was a history of domestic violence between Lomando and Bardzell, and Molinelli said violating a restraining order was one of the charges against Lomando, according to the NJ.com report. Lomando is also charged with murder and weapons offenses.

Bardzell had been a special education teacher in Teaneck.

The prosecutor also said that Lomando had been "separated" for quite some time from the NYPD for physical and/or mental reasons, but could not elaborate, according to the NorthJersey.com report.

Calls to the Bergen County Prosecutor's office by New Jersey 101.5 had not yet been returned.
