9 college students face theft charges using debit cards

Police in southern New Jersey say nine Rowan University students stole thousands of dollars by using college debit cards to make bogus returns at a convenience store.

Glassboro police say the students were using their university debit cards to make merchandise returns resulting in the loss of $35,000 at a 7-Eleven store. Rowan officials reported suspicious financial activity at the store, prompting the investigation.

Investigators say student and store employee 21-year-old Kwadwo Brefo-Boateng was crediting his and his friends' accounts. Authorities say the Lindenwold man had entered numerous merchandise returns, resulting in bogus credits to the accounts.

Brefo-Boatening and eight other students face theft charges in the case.

It's unclear if they have attorneys who could comment on the charges.
