The article states that an officer shot two people shortly after 7 p.m. in the area of Adams, Springwood and Atkins avenues.

First Assistant Prosecutor Marc LeMieux told NJ.com that an officer identified as Terrance McGhee spotted a 20-year-old male suspect while on patrol at about 7:19 p.m. The officer noticed that the suspect appeared to have a gun. The man's name and the reason he was stopped by the officer have not been released.

LeMieux told NJ.com that the suspect fled the area, then opened fire with a 9-mm semi-automatic weapon at which point the officer returned fire, "striking the man, whose wounds were non-life-threatening." In addition, an 8-year-old girl was wounded in the exchange of gunfire, but it is not yet known who is believed to have shot her. She was treated and released at a local hospital, also for a non-life-threatening injury.

The officer did not sustain any injuries.

The prosecutor's office could not immediately be reached for comment.
