FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — A woman struck on Route 9 was the second pedestrian killed in the same spot in the past week.

Marie R. Casalino, 67, of Freehold Township, was crossing the northbound lanes in front of the Freehold Mall just after 9 p.m. when she was hit by a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Sahara driven by Nicholas C. Berenbroick, 23, also of Freehold Township, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.

Casalino was pronounced dead at the scene. The road was closed for several hours for an investigation and clean up.

Gramiccioni said Berenbroick remained at the scene after the crash. No charges have been filed in the case.

It was just over a week ago that Lydia O. Lim, 70, of Long Island City, New York, was fatally struck in the southbound lanes in the same area.

Freehold Township Captain George Baumann,  said he cannot recall many accidents happening at this location. He said there is a bus commuter parking lot on the southbound side with a crosswalk and signal to allow crossing the road which has two lanes in each direction.

"We're going to review (the crossing) but I can't see any changes there because it's well lit and really up to this point had any real issues," the 32-year veteran officer said.

Gramiccioni asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call Freehold Township Police at 732-462-7908.
